Since its inception in 2003, Rotary Park has served as our community hub for outdoor youth and adult athletic events. Home to the Kittitas Valley Junior Soccer Association, Ellensburg Youth Baseball Softball, Ellensburg School District athletic programs, adult softball, community cross country skiing, and numerous special events such as fun runs and larger community events such as Touch a Truck and the Gladiator Dash, Rotary Park has become an extension of our front yard where community members gather and meet.

On December 2, 2022, the City lost the Ellensburg Racquet & Recreation Center (ERRC) to a fire. Already short on indoor recreation space, the loss of the ERRC struck a deeper blow to our community. As a result of the ERRC loss, the City has moved the planning process for a replacement facility to the top of its project priority list, which triggered the update for the Rotary Park master plan.

The primary focus of the 2023 Rotary Park Plan update is to identify a location within Rotary Park for a fieldhouse building. The proposed fieldhouse measures approximately 100,000 square feet and will accommodate athletic activities such as basketball, volleyball, pickleball, softball, baseball, football, soccer, and rugby. Additionally, it could have meeting room space, an indoor walking track, and other recreational amenities. The City plans to have the fieldhouse project under construction in 2024.

Three concept park master plans were developed, all of which add a considerable amount of parking for the Fieldhouse and a separate access road into the park from Anderson Road. One of the most important goals is to develop a park design which reduces the amount of vehicular traffic in the adjacent West Ellensburg neighborhood, as well as the current parking areas of Rotary Park.

Ellensburg City Council Plan Adoption November 20, 2023

Rotary Park Plan Approved by City Council

At their November 20, 2023 meeting, the Ellensburg City Council unanimously adopted the Rotary Park Master Plan dated October 25, 2023.

The planning process for the update included two stakeholder meetings, which consisted of organizations that currently use Rotary Park for their programs, as well as organizations that may wish to use Rotary Park in the future. The programs represented in the stakeholder meetings included: youth baseball/softball, youth soccer, school district athletics, disc golf, riding railroad, running, youth rugby, and pickleball.

A community online survey was also advertised to the community asking for feedback on what people like about the park, what things people would change about the park, and what amenities the community would like to see added to the park. Notices of the survey were mailed directly to addresses in the West Ellensburg neighborhood. There were 478 responses to the survey. Many of those responses reflected the need for more parking, additional restrooms, field lights, a large splash pad, additional walking paths, and more children's playground areas. Neighbors who live in the West Ellensburg neighborhood voiced concerns over the location of the existing dog park and would prefer that it be relocated to the southern edge of the park away from the residences. Rather than move the park, a large tree grove was added between the off-leash park and the neighborhood to mitigate noise.

The new plan adds field lights and field turf infields at all the baseball/softball fields, a new turf soccer/baseball field, the fieldhouse building, 1,110 additional parking stalls in the southeast corner of the park, a riding railroad, a splash pad, additional picnic shelters and playground areas, soft surface perimeter trail, disc golf area, six new restrooms, eight new pickleball courts at West Ellensburg Park, and three new youth baseball/softball fields. A new access road into the park is also being planned off Anderson Road.

The City would like to thank all the community members who took the time to provide input on Rotary Park and the new plan. Your participation was critical in the development of the plan which will help guide the City as we continue to build out Rotary Park.
